Why it matters

Two systems, one goal

Healthcare workers moving to Australia have to satisfy two separate systems: professional registration or recognition, and migration. Each has its own requirements, timeframes and costs, and a delay in one holds up the other.

I see experienced nurses spend months on the wrong step, or carers told about pathways that do not exist for their role. The sector is genuinely short of people, but that does not make the process simple.

Let's work out, honestly, which steps you need and in what order.

At a glance

What usually applies

Registration first

Registered and enrolled nurses need registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board through Ahpra to practise.

Employer sponsorship

Hospitals, aged care and disability providers can sponsor eligible workers on 482 and 494 visas.

Industry agreements

Some care roles are accessed through specific labour agreements rather than the standard lists.

Skilled visas

Nurses are often well placed for points-tested and state-nominated visas, depending on the program year.

Figures are general information current at 14 October 2026 and change regularly. They are not advice about your circumstances.

Who you'll be speaking with

I'm Nathan Joo, founder and principal director of Cornerstone Migration and a Registered Migration Agent (MARN 1173091). For nearly two decades I have worked in Australian and New Zealand migration, employer sponsorship, skilled visa pathways and workforce strategy.

I started this practice because I believe migrants deserve advice that puts their future first. You will get an honest assessment, including when the answer is that a visa is unlikely, and you will deal with me, not a call centre.

You can verify my registration on the official register of migration agents.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I apply for a visa before I am registered?

For most nursing pathways, registration or a positive assessment is needed first. We can help you plan both together.

I am an aged care worker. Is there a visa for me?

Possibly, depending on your role, qualifications and whether an employer can use an applicable agreement. Let's check.

Can my family come with me?

Most sponsored and skilled visas allow you to include your partner and dependent children.

What English test do I need?

Registration bodies and visas have their own English requirements, which may differ. We'll tell you which applies.
