The trade is in demand. The process is where people get stuck.
I work on both sides of the construction industry in Queensland. I see builders who cannot find enough qualified people, and I see skilled tradespeople overseas who would be an asset on any site but cannot find a clear, honest route here.
Between the two sits a process that is easy to get wrong: a skills assessment with Trades Recognition Australia, licensing rules that differ from your home country, and visa options that depend on whether you have an employer, a state nomination or neither.
The Government has funded a faster trades recognition system and wants more skilled tradespeople in the workforce. That is good news, but it does not remove the need to get the evidence right the first time.
What usually matters most
Skills assessment
Most trade pathways need a positive assessment, usually through Trades Recognition Australia, before anything else.
Employer sponsorship
The 482 Skills in Demand and 494 regional visas let a Queensland employer sponsor you. Many trades are on the Core Skills Occupation List.
Licensing
Some trades, such as electrical and plumbing, need a Queensland licence to work unsupervised. We plan for this early.
No job offer yet?
Skilled independent and state-nominated visas may suit some applicants. Points, age and English all matter.
Figures are general information current at 14 October 2026 and change regularly. They are not advice about your circumstances.

Who you'll be speaking with
I'm Nathan Joo, founder and principal director of Cornerstone Migration and a Registered Migration Agent (MARN 1173091). For nearly two decades I have worked in Australian and New Zealand migration, employer sponsorship, skilled visa pathways and workforce strategy.
I started this practice because I believe migrants deserve advice that puts their future first. You will get an honest assessment, including when the answer is that a visa is unlikely, and you will deal with me, not a call centre.
You can verify my registration on the official register of migration agents.

Common questions
Can you find me a job in Australia?
We give migration advice. We cannot promise a job or a visa outcome. Where an employer is seeking workers through a lawful sponsorship process, we can explain how that works.
My trade is not on a list. Is there any option?
Sometimes. Occupation lists change, and some pathways use different lists. A short consultation will tell you where you stand.
Do I need to pay anyone for a job offer?
No. Paying for sponsorship or a job offer is illegal in Australia. If someone asks you to, walk away and tell us.
How good does my English need to be?
It depends on the visa. Most skilled and sponsored visas have a minimum English requirement, and higher scores can add points.
