Why it matters

The graduate years go faster than you think

Most graduates I meet are focused on the next visa. Very few have mapped the whole road to permanent residence, and by the time their 485 visa is half gone, some options have quietly closed.

State nomination programs open and close through the year and can fill quickly. Points change as you age. Employer sponsorship depends on finding the right employer in an eligible role at the right salary. Each of these needs time to line up.

I help graduates build a plan early, so the years on a graduate visa are spent becoming eligible, not waiting to find out.

At a glance

Common pathways after graduation

Employer sponsorship

A 482 Skills in Demand visa can lead to 186 permanent residence. Salary and occupation must qualify.

State nomination

190 and 491 nominations depend on each state's settings, which change during the program year.

Skilled independent

The 189 visa is points-tested and highly competitive, with invitations driven by occupation and score.

Points that matter

Age, English, Australian study, skilled employment and regional study can all lift your score.

Figures are general information current at 14 October 2026 and change regularly. They are not advice about your circumstances.

Who you'll be speaking with

I'm Nathan Joo, founder and principal director of Cornerstone Migration and a Registered Migration Agent (MARN 1173091). For nearly two decades I have worked in Australian and New Zealand migration, employer sponsorship, skilled visa pathways and workforce strategy.

I started this practice because I believe migrants deserve advice that puts their future first. You will get an honest assessment, including when the answer is that a visa is unlikely, and you will deal with me, not a call centre.

You can verify my registration on the official register of migration agents.
