Parent Visa

If you are the parent of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or New Zealand citizen who has settled in Australia, you may be eligible to apply for a parent visa. Both these visas are permanent, but take up to 30 years to process. However, you can typically stay In Australia on a bridging visa during this time.

Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) allows the older parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, and eligible New Zealand citizens to reside permanently in Australia.

THIS VISA ALLOWS THE PERSON TO:

  • Live, work and study in Australia permanently;
  • Sponsor family member/s to come to Australia;
  • Register in Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare system;
  • Apply for citizenship, if qualified.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN APPLYING FOR THIS VISA:

Processing

  • Processing time depends on the circumstance, but the Cornerstone Migration team will exert best efforts to get it in less than the stated months.
  • Be mindful when filling the application. Avoid errors when inputting data, and always check documents to be included.
  • Pay the correct visa application charges. Application will not be process if the applicant has not paid the costs.

Eligibility

  • Does not hold a Sponsored Parent Visa – Temporary (subclass 870).
  • Be in the minimum age to receive age pension in Australia.
  • Have a child who is an eligible Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand citizen.
  • Meet the ‘balance of family’ test. This requires that at least half of your children reside in Australia, or that more of your children reside in Australia than in any other single country.
  • Provide an assurance of support, stating that you will not depend on government support after entering Australia.
  • Meet the health and character requirement.

COST

Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804) incurs the following costs:

  • Main applicant: AUD6,415
  • Pay in two (2) parts, known as instalments. Applying is the first instalment, then the department will contact the applicant for the second instalment.
  • There are also other payments, not part of the cost mentioned above, for health checks, biometrics, and police certificates.

Parent Visa (Subclass 103) allows the parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens to migrate permanently to Australia.

THIS VISA ALLOWS THE PERSON TO:

  • Live, work and study in Australia permanently;
  • Sponsor family member/s to come to Australia;
  • Travel in and out of Australia for five (5) years;
  • Register in Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare system;
  • Apply for citizenship, if qualified.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN APPLYING FOR THIS VISA:

  • If applying for this visa as a retiree, must have a health insurance until Parent visa is granted.

There is also the option to apply for a temporary parent visa. This visa allows parents who apply to live in Australia for up to two years if they have a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who has settled in Australia. On this visa you can live and work in Australia. You are also entitled to Medicare.

While the Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa – Subclass 173 cannot be renewed, after arriving in Australia you can apply for the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) which allows you to spread the cost over a number of years.
