Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineer plans, designs, organises and oversees the assembly, erection, operation, and maintenance of mechanical and process plant and installations. They mainly work in: Manufacturing; Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; and Mining.
 
While there are jobs in many parts of Australia, Victoria has a large share of Mechanical Engineers. *This is a large occupation including Industrial and Production Engineers employing 30,800 workers. The number of workers has grown moderately over the past 5 years. Over the next 5 years (to May 2022) the number of workers is expected to fall to 29,100. Around 9,000 job openings are likely over this time from workers leaving and new jobs being created.
 
The vacancies for mechanical engineers surveyed in Victoria for the Department of Employment 2017 Survey of Employers who have Recently Advertised (SERA), were mostly for intermediate to senior positions and were distributed broadly across the manufacturing, energy, engineering consultancy and commercial/residential building industry sectors. Roles included design and documentation; engineering project management; improvement and maintenance; project support, and client/stakeholder relationship development, management and liaison.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree or higher is usually required. Relevant experience or on-the-job training is also needed. Registration or licensing may also be required
