Draftspersons and Technician

Civil Engineering Draftspersons and Technicians assist in civil engineering research, design, construction, operations, and maintenance. Their main tasks include preparing sketches, charts, tabulations, plans and designs for civil engineering works such as drainage, water supply, sewerage reticulation systems, roads, airports, dams, bridges and other structures. They also interpret work assignment instructions, applying appropriate procedures and selecting equipment, conducting field and laboratory tests of construction materials and soils, and collecting data for traffic surveys.
 
* This is a medium-sized occupation employing 13,400 workers. The number of workers has grown very strongly over the past 5 years. Over the next 5 years (to May 2022) the number of workers is expected to stay about the same at 13,700. Around 5,000 job openings are likely over this time from workers leaving and new jobs being created. While there are jobs in many parts of Australia, Queensland has a large share of Civil Engineering Draftspersons and Technicians. They mainly work in: Professional, Scientific and Technical Services; Construction; and Public Administration and Safety.
 
A small number of employers from a recent survey done by the Department of Employment stated that Queensland vacancies are harder to fill and attributed this to there being more work in New South Wales and Victoria at present. Similarly, regional employers stated that location made recruitment more difficult, however, despite these comments almost all vacancies were filled within six weeks.

Qualifications

An Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma, or at least 3 years of relevant experience is usually needed. Nearly all workers have a Certificate III or higher Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification. Even with a qualification, experience or on-the-job training is usually needed. Registration or licensing may also be required
